In its 12th year, the Reentry Conference, Resource and Job Fair brings hundreds of individuals and organizations from across the Bay Area and California to explore the latest concerns, opportunities and advancements of justice-involved and crime-affected individuals and families.

OBJECTIVES:

Influence public policy and legislation.
Build stronger organizational practices connected with coalitions and networks.
Train with providers and advocates.
Research community organizing and actions.
Strengthen discussions, explore opportunities and steps to support people in reentry as well as crime survivors.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Justice-involved youth and adults; families with incarcerated loved ones, crime survivors, non-profit providers, advocates, volunteers working with incarcerated people; law enforcement professionals, probation and corrections staff; victim services; educational; religious and social institutions; department of justice agencies; health services; housing, second chance employers and legal rights organizations.

Keynote Panel Overview

The conference is set to commence with an engaging opening segment, beginning with a warm Welcome and Introductions by Julio Escobar. This will be followed by a heartfelt Pledge for Peace, graciously offered by Most Rev. Salvatore J. Cordileone, setting a tone of harmony and unity for the event. The program will then transition to a powerful Crime Survivors Speak segment, where Esperanza Navas will share her poignant narrative. The session will continue with deeply moving Formerly Incarcerated Testimonials, providing unique perspectives from Excell Network Students. The opening will culminate with an insightful Keynote Panel, featuring Bay Area Juvenile Justice Probation Officials who will discuss the Rehabilitation Vision for Incarcerated Adolescents and Young Adults, promising to be a thought-provoking exchange on the future of juvenile justice. This comprehensive opening program is designed to not only inform but also inspire all attendees, paving the way for a conference filled with meaningful dialogue and transformative ideas.

Bay Area Juvenile Justice Probation Officials Discuss Rehabilitation Vision of Incarcerated Adolescents and Young Adults

This panel discussion will convene key juvenile justice probation officials from the Bay Area to explore and share their visions for rehabilitating incarcerated adolescents and young adults. The focus will be on innovative approaches, challenges, and successes in transforming the juvenile justice system to better support the rehabilitation and reintegration of young offenders. Attendees will gain valuable insights into current practices and future directions aimed at fostering positive outcomes for youth within the justice system. The session will feature a question-and-answer segment, providing the audience with the opportunity to engage directly with the panelists and contribute to this important conversation.

Join us for an Affordable & Fair Chance Housing discussion and discover the numerous barriers that formerly incarcerated people endure while trying to find and secure affordable housing upon their release from custody. In this discussion we'll explore the obstacles, opportunities and solutions being offered to help break the cycles of poverty, incarceration, and homelessness. Whether you work for a housing focused government agency, community base organization, or simply a community member concerned with public safety and the homeless crisis, this panel was designed for you to learn and engage with today's innovative leaders on this critical subject.

Restorative Justice Mission of the Catholic Church in California

The Catholic Church Restorative Justice Ministries in California envision a society healed from divisiveness and fear that responds to crime and violence with restoration and healing so that every person can experience a dignified and plentiful life. This bold mission requires all people of goodwill to advocate for justice, bring awareness to the realities of crime and violence, and support those who have caused harm and those who have been harmed. For than 20 years, the Restorative Justice Directors of the Catholic dioceses throughout California have set forth a unique state-wide collaborative model to provide direct services, awareness and advocacy for restorative justice and restorative practices. This panel will discuss the role of Restorative Justice Ministries today to live out this mission of the Church, and how their community- focused collaborative model gives hope for the future.

Veterans Justice: Insights, Avenues and Solutions

This Veterans Justice Panel is a dedicated group comprised of legal experts, veterans' advocates, justice-impacted supervision, and representatives from relevant community-based and VA agencies. The purpose, of this panel presentation is to demonstrate the impact of collaborative service provisions that veterans receive and the fair treatment within the justice system as they address their unique legal challenges. The panel discussion will include issues such as access to legal services, diversion programs for veterans with mental health or substance abuse issues, understanding and navigating veterans' benefits, addressing life skills strategies for Veterans to gain during their in-custody tenure, and advocating for policies that support veterans' rights. Utilizing this collaboration with various stakeholders, our panel aims to promote justice, support, and rehabilitation for those who have served our country.

The Healing Power of the Victim Offender Education Group (VOEG)

This panel will discuss the experiences of a survivor who has participated in our Surrogate Survivor Impact Panels as well as a direct Victim Offender Dialogue (VOD), two VOEG graduates, and two VOEG facilitators. Insight Prison Project is a division of Five Keys. The VOEG program is currently being offered at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, Pelican Bay State Prison, R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility, Valley State Prison, California Men’s Colony, California Institution for Men, the California Institution for Women, the San Francisco Juvenile Justice Center, and in four correctional institutions in Colorado. We are currently recruiting to train VOEG facilitators to replicate to the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla, Correctional Training Facility in Soledad, and Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad.

Unveiling The Flaws In San Francisco’s Response to The Drug and Homeless Crisis

The panel confronts the escalating crisis gripping the city: the intertwined issues of drug abuse and homelessness, which have resulted in a staggering 3,300 fatal overdoses since 2019. Despite significant investments, public systems are failing, exacerbating street conditions, and eroding public trust while residents suffer. Common sense strategies are often overlooked, leading to tragic outcomes, including deaths within government-funded housing sites. The panel underscores the stark lack of equity in the city's response, particularly the marginalization of communities of color, who bear a disproportionate burden of the crisis. It stresses the urgent need to address the glaring pay disparities between non-profit workers and city employees. By centering equity, rectifying systemic flaws, and ensuring fair compensation, the panel advocates for a more just and effective approach to tackling this pressing challenge facing San Francisco.

Employment Best Practices for People Reentering Society After Incarceration

The reintegration challenges encountered by returning citizens who have served time in prison underscore a pressing concern within the United States criminal justice system. A primary obstacle is the restricted employment prospects faced by these individuals, frequently attributed to societal stigma and employer prejudices against hiring those with criminal histories. These hurdles not only impact the individuals directly but also extend their effects to their families and communities. The failure to secure stable housing, meaningful employment, and educational opportunities perpetuates cycles of poverty and social exclusion. This panel aims to focus on the employment-related challenges and suggest effective strategies for the successful reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals.

The Benefits of Including Faith in a Human Trafficking Survivor’s Healing Journey

The journey of restoration and healing begins for survivors of human trafficking when they are able to escape modern-day slavery and learn to embrace faith. We invite you to join us as these inspirational survivor leaders share with you their stories of overcoming human trafficking and the ways in which their faith has guided them in making positive changes in their lives.

JUST FREE: System Impacted Youth Surviving San Francisco

Larkin Street Youth Service's Art Program in collaboration with Felton Institute and the Young Adult Court worked with Filmmaker Spencer Wilkinson and systems impacted young adults to co-create a documentary short. The film features young adults and adults, who share their personal journeys of navigating the criminal Justice System. The film addresses the many barriers young people are facing in San Francisco, as one of the most vulnerable populations in the city and includes events surrounding the murder of a young trans youth Banko Brown, which occurred during the project filming. The film screening will be followed by a Panel Discussion, moderated by Krista DeNio, Associate Director of Arts and Education, Larkin Street Youth Services and film producer.
