Youth Ministry

The Archdiocese of San Francisco supports youth ministry programs that foster the catechesis, moral, and spiritual formation of young people in Middle School through High School.

Our Goals

Guided by the USCCB’s document, Renewing the Vision (1997), our ministry has three goals:

To empower young people (ages 13-17) to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today;

To draw young people into responsible participation in the life, mission, and work of the faith community;

To foster the personal and spiritual growth of each young person.

To accomplish these goals, we offer training, community, workshops, resources, retreats, and collaboration opportunities for Youth Ministry Leaders within the Archdiocese, as well as training, retreats, catechetical events, leadership opportunities for youth themselves.

Genuine love is demanding. But its beauty lies precisely in the demands it makes. Only those able to make demands on themselves in the name of love can then demand love from others.

Living the Divine Heart, A Contemplative Retreat

5:30pm (04/12) – 12:00pm (04/14)
Cost: 350
“We are put on this earth for a very short time in order to learn to love,”

– James Finley, Ph.D., spiritual teacher, and writer

Our hearts are a portal for God’s heart, and where our hearts and God’s heart meet, Divine Love is fulfilled. Together, we’ll explore the nature of Divine Love as a living relationship. This will be a time of prayer and art making, silence and sacred conversation, self-care and connection to community. Sessions will include reflections and teachings from Colette’s book, The Divine Heart, as well as Christian mystics, sacred poetry and scripture. We will engage in contemplative practices such as lectio divina, visio divina, walking meditation in nature, and spiritual journal writing. Come and step into sacred space in the joy of community and find grace, strength, and renewed vitality to continue on life’s journey.

Presenters:

Colette Lafia is an award-winning author, spiritual director, and retreat leader. She has a passion for the contemplative path, and invites us to see ourselves as manifestations of Divine Love. Her most recent book is The Divine Heart: Seven Ways to Live in God’s Love, which received a 2022 Nautilus Book Award.

Mary Loebig Giles (she/her) is Pastor of Action and Contemplation at Common Table SF, leads a Faith & Justice cohort, and offers spiritual direction outdoors in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. She facilitates retreats that awaken the heart through embodied and contemplative practices.

Solemn Vespers, Rosary, and Eucharistic Adoration for Hong Kong with Archbishop Cordileone

5:00pm
Join Archbishop Cordileone for a special prayer service for Hong Kong, especially for Cardinal Joseph Zen and Jimmy Lai.

Cardinal Zen, 92, is the bishop emeritus of Hong Kong (2002 – 2009). He is an outspoken advocate for religious freedom and democracy. Cardinal Zen was arrested in May 2022 by Hong Kong authorities and put on trial for allegedly failing to civilly register a pro-democracy fund. He was convicted and ordered to pay a fine, which he has appealed.

Mr. Lai is a 76-year-old Catholic businessman in Hong Kong who, inspired by his Catholic faith, has peacefully advocated democracy and respect for human rights. Because he spoke the truth in the fight for freedom, Mr. Lai has been jailed by authorities since December 2020.

Holy Hour to Pray for Persecuted Christians and Lecture, “The Prison Witness of Jimmy Lai,” by William McGurn (Wall Street Journal)

Join St. Patrick’s Seminary, the Benedict XVI Institute, and Archbishop Cordileone on Wednesday, May 8th, to pray for and learn about the situation of persecuted Christians on mainland China and in Hong Kong.

The evening begins with Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, led by Archbishop Cordileone. Special music for the Holy Hour includes the premiere of a new composition by Frank La Rocca on a text by James Matthew Wilson, “Stanzas for the Chinese Martyrs,” commissioned by the Benedict XVI Institute for Sacred Music and Divine Worship. Other compositions by Diana Corliss, Kevin Allen, and Paul Jernberg will also be sung by the choir, directed by Dr. Jennifer Donelson-Nowicka of the Catholic Institute of Sacred Music.

The second and final event of the 2023–2024 St. Patrick’s Seminary Lecture Series follows. The lecture by William McGurn, opinion columnist for The Wall Street Journal and godfather of Jimmy Lai, is entitled “The Prison Witness of Jimmy Lai.” Jimmy Lai is the founder of the popular Hong Kong paper Apple Daily, who has now been imprisoned in solitary confinement for organizing pro-democracy protests.

William McGurn is a member of The Wall Street Journal editorial board and writes the weekly “Main Street” column for the Journal each Tuesday. Previously he served as Chief Speechwriter for President George W. Bush. He spent more than a decade overseas—in Brussels for The Wall Street Journal/Europe and in Hong Kong with both the Asian Wall Street Journal and the Far Eastern Economic Review. And in the mid-1990s, he was Washington Bureau Chief for National Review. Bill is author of a book on Hong Kong (Perfidious Albion) and a monograph on terrorism (Terrorist or Freedom Fighter). He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, holds a BA in philosophy from Notre Dame and an MS in Communications from Boston University.

Frank La Rocca’s Mass of the Americas has been hailed as “perhaps the most significant Catholic composition of our lifetimes” and “the best liturgical composition for the Mass since Duruflé.” Cappella label’s recent recordings of La Rocca’s Mass of the Americas and Requiem for the Forgotten/Messe des Malades have debuted in the top spots of Billboard’s Traditional Classical chart. La Rocca is composer-in-residence for the Benedict XVI Institute for Sacred Music and Divine Worship, a faculty member of the Catholic Institute of Sacred Music, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Catholic Scholars and Artists.
