Last year, we began a tradition in our archdiocese of offering a special Mass for the intentions of all our medical professionals on or around the Feast of St. Luke. This year we continued the tradition, but took many precautions to continue the tradition in a safe and healthful manner.
The White Mass is the traditional name given for the Mass for medical professionals, drawn from the white coats that physicians still wear and the white uniforms worn by nurses in times past. Watch the short video (above) to learn more. St. Luke was an educated Greek physician, author of the Gospel of St. Luke and a companion of the Apostle Paul who remained with him when he was imprisoned in Rome. He is a worthy patron of the medical profession.
This year, St. Augustine's Church hosted our Mass. Mass was offered out of doors, in a socially distant manner, and observed all public-health regulations and guidelines. Archbishop Cordileone blessed and disbursed St. Luke medals after Mass. Unfortunately, we were not able to host a reception this year. All medical workers were welcomed to come to Mass: doctors, dentists, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, physical and occupational therapists, nursing assistants and all others in the broader healthcare field.
