Parishes gather for annual Simbang Gabi Commissioning Mass and Parol Blessing
By Catholic San Francisco
Filipino ministries from parishes across the Archdiocese of San Francisco gathered on Friday, December 6, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in South San Francisco for the annual Simbang Gabi Commissioning Mass and Parol Blessing. This tradition marks the beginning of preparations for Simbang Gabi, the novena of Masses leading up to Christmas, which will commence on December 16.
The vibrant celebration brought together representatives from parishes, each bearing their uniquely crafted parol, or star lantern. The parol, a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem, is a hallmark of Filipino Christmas traditions and a testament to faith and hope. During the Commissioning Mass, these stars were blessed, signifying the light of Christ and the unity of the Filipino Catholic community.
Sacramento Auxiliary Bishop Rey Bersabal presided over the Mass, joined by more than 22 priests from across the Archdiocese. In his homily, Bishop Bersabal spoke about the significance of Simbang Gabi as a time of spiritual preparation and joyful anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ. He encouraged the faithful to use this season to deepen their relationship with God and to spread the light of Christ in their families and communities.
The ceremony included a procession of parols, with each parish presenting their lantern in a moment of shared pride and devotion. The Mayor of Daly City was also present and announced a special proclamation in honor of Simbang Gabi.
Following the Mass, attendees gathered for fellowship, enjoying traditional Filipino food and fellowship.
Simbang Gabi holds a special place in the hearts of Filipino Catholics both in the Philippines and abroad. The Commissioning Mass and Parol Blessing at St. Augustine Catholic Church once again set the tone for this beloved season, bringing light and hope to all who participated.
