Youth Ministry

The Archdiocese of San Francisco supports youth ministry programs that foster the catechesis, moral, and spiritual formation of young people in Middle School through High School.

Our Goals

Guided by the USCCB’s document, Renewing the Vision (1997), our ministry has three goals:

To empower young people (ages 13-17) to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today;

To draw young people into responsible participation in the life, mission, and work of the faith community;

To foster the personal and spiritual growth of each young person.

To accomplish these goals, we offer training, community, workshops, resources, retreats, and collaboration opportunities for Youth Ministry Leaders within the Archdiocese, as well as training, retreats, catechetical events, leadership opportunities for youth themselves.

Registration is now open for the Archdiocese of San Francisco’s Eucharistic Congress

Genuine love is demanding. But its beauty lies precisely in the demands it makes. Only those able to make demands on themselves in the name of love can then demand love from others.

Office of Faith Formation
Talitha Koum

Come engage in your life as catechists, parish catechetical leaders, volunteers, and Catholic people in the Archdiocese of San Francisco as we celebrate our Eucharistic Revival with the theme “Talitha Koum” – Mark 5:41 (Little Girl Arise).

We are challenged in these times to arise and bring Christ’s light to our darkness, words of comfort to sorrowing, peace in places of violence and to witness our baptismal call.

As Jesus asks that bread be given to the little girl may we find nourishment in the Eucharist to go out and be better disciples of Jesus – bread broken and shared.

A Weekend with Hildegard von Bingen

5:30pm (11/17) – 12:00pm (11/19)
Cost: 325
Born in the late 11th century and living into the early 12th, Hildegard of Bingen lived during the medieval period and is considered a mystic and prophetic visionary of her time. She is also sometimes referred to as a “Renaissance Woman” because of the depth and breadth of her knowledge and talents.

Hildegard spoke beautifully of the harmony of God’s creation, believing it held the “greening power of Christ.’ Walking slowly through Hildegard’s life offers the chance to contemplate connections to our own.

Hildegard wrote hymns and antiphons, poems, and created artwork. She created her own language and wrote one of the first musical plays. She had visions and wrote letters challenging authorities in profound ways, particularly for a woman of her time. Her beautiful chants, some to be shared by Erin, will create a contemplative atmosphere for telling her story again, remembering and honoring her life.

By focusing on particular themes, we will allow her life to speak into ours, challenging and inspiring our living today. Music, storytelling, recognizing Hildegard’s life as a window to our own, silence and sharing, space for journaling, creating, and letting the content speak to you as you rest will all be woven together as parts of the weekend.

SF Turkey Drive at St Emydius Church

9:00am (11/18) – 12:00pm (12/16)
This year’s message tells it how it is: A Gift of Food is a Gift of Life.

The SF Turkey Drive is a community effort that was started in 2012 with one single goal: to fight hunger locally. Thanks to the many generous donors, in the past 3 years, the SF Turkey Drive provided enough food to prepare over 160,000 meals for the hungry. This year again, donations will help continue this effort against hunger in San Francisco.

The 2023 SF Turkey Drive will be happening at the St Emydius Church parking lot, 350 De Montfort Avenue (at Jules) in the Ingleside District of San Francisco on 2 Saturdays: November 18, and December 16 from 9 a.m. till Noon. Additionally, also happening at the SF Zoo parking lot, 1 Zoo Drive, on Monday November 20 from 9:30 a.m. till 12:30 p.m. (Free parking at the Zoo with turkey donation during the drive).

The 2023 beneficiary is the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank, an organization who supply food to many – including the St Anthony’s Dining Room – and addresses hunger heads-on in numerous ways in our local community.
More information at www.SFTurkeyDrive.com.

Donations to the SF Turkey Drive can be made in one of several forms: turkeys, boxes/bags of fresh vegetables, and hams (in December), at the drives; “virtual” turkeys donated through a secure website portal at sfturkeydrive.com; or checks payable to SFM Food Bank and mailed to SF Turkey Drive, c/o St. Emydius Church, 286 Ashton Avenue, San Francisco CA 94112.

About a year later, he felt invited by the Lord to share in his priesthood. As a seminarian for the Diocese of Trenton, Fr. Luke attended Seton Hall University, where his knowledge of the faith and the life of prayer grew tremendously.

After graduating, he entered the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and served in the friars’ mission of preaching the Gospel and attending to the needs of the poor in NYC for fifteen years. While living in the Bronx, he served at the Saint Francis Youth Center, Saint Anthony’s Shelter for Renewal, and Cardinal Spellman High School. Fr. Luke was ordained a priest by His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in May of 2013. He completed the Institute for Priestly Formation’s Spiritual Direction Training Program in January 2020. During his time as assistant chaplain at Cardinal Spellman High School Fr. Luke published videos on YouTube which can be viewed here.

Thanksgiving Meal’s Donation Drive for people in San Francisco Jails

12:00am (11/01) – 12:00am (11/30)
Feeding the Imprisoned during Thanksgiving

What kind of food do prisoners eat? The most common food prisoners get includes bread, potatoes, beans, soup, milk and in rare instances, a piece of fresh fruit. Many “meat” dishes are cut with edible soy product. Other, more tasty foods are available, but they can be costly for people incarcerated.

Join the Archdiocese of San Francisco – Restorative Justice Ministry, the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department and Five Keys Schools & Programs with a corporate donation, to make Thanksgiving in 2023 for one day a joyful day.

You can also make an individual donation. A $15.00 dollar donation will sponsor a full meal.

Vessels of Love: An Advent Retreat

12:00pm (12/01) – 3:00pm (12/02)
Cost: 225
Vessels of Love: An Advent Retreat
Friday, Dec. 1, 12pm – Saturday, Dec. 2, 3pm

“God loves things by becoming them,” writes Richard Rohr in his book, The Universal Christ. Everyone and everything is a vessel in which God’s love is always flowing. We are being invited to trust in our capacity to be a channel for the Holy.

During this tender time of Advent, we bring ourselves as we are––our hesitations and certainties, our desires and sometimes wayward hearts––and ask to live more fully as vessels of Divine Love. What would it mean to trust that our desire and God’s desire is one desire?

Through silence, scripture, creative expression, and contemplative sharing, we will listen for how Love is calling and how we might collaborate with Sacred Presence in this season of expectancy and new birth.

Notes: We begin by enjoying lunch together on Friday at noon. That evening, after our evening session, we will join the Mercy Center community for Taize Prayer Around the Cross at 8pm. Our final session ends on Saturday at 3pm. Retreatants may linger, walk the labyrinth, or visit the chapel before departing.

Cradled in Creation, Cultivating a Reciprocal Compassion

10:00am – 4:00pm
Cost: 65
There is a universal recognition throughout the wisdom traditions that sacredness is held in nature. The ways in which we are intricately woven together, more in a circle than a hierarchy – human beings and all the other realms of creation. During this Advent season of waiting, watching, and wondering about how the Divine grows new life over and over again in each of us for, the birthing of that into the world for all of us, come ponder such things in terms of our relationship to all creation.

Come for a day experiencing and contemplating the ways creation compassionately coaxes and calls us into new life. Come ponder the ways we may be called to reciprocate that same compassion shown to us, out toward the rest of creation. The sound of ocean waves, creation imagery set to music – both classical and the music of Alexa Sunshine Rose, the wisdom and invitations of scripture and other holy texts, poets and authors such as Joyce Rupp, Judy Cannato, Robin Wall Kimmerer and others, silence, sharing, space for wondering and walking and more will be woven together to create this contemplative Advent experience.

Come receive some of the gifts of love and healing creation so generously gives, and ponder our part in the seeding of that same sacred new life among us all.

16th annual Simbang Gabi Commissioning Mass

6:30pm
Come join us as the Archdiocese sends us forth on a mission to be this light of Christ!

16th Annual Simbang Gabi Commissioning Mass
Wednesday, December 13, 2023, 6:30pm
Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption

Principal Celebrant: Cardinal Robert McElroy

About the Mass:

Each year, the Archdiocese holds a Commissioning Mass to herald the beginning of “Simbang Gabi Masses” widely celebrated in its various parishes throughout the Archdiocese of San Francisco during the Christmas season.  “Simbang Gabi” is a prominent centuries old Filipino Catholic faith practice with roots in farming and fishing communities dating back to the 1600’s.  This practice traditionally consists of attending a novena of pre-dawn, or night-time masses leading up to Christmas Eve.  Please double check the dates and times of Simbang Gabi masses that may be celebrated in your parish.

We encourage you to attend our Simbang Gabi Commissioning Mass, and to bring your own Filipino Christmas “Parol”, and your family “Cresche” (or Nativity scene) to receive a special blessing after the mass.
